Data Dig

When it comes to the information that there is about us, a lot of personal information is online. Some of the things are connected to what we post ourselves, but others is public information. I was given an assignment to use search engines to find out what information was about myself online.
I was a little nervous to see what I would find out but I was excited to see what I could find.

When searching to learn more about myself I was not shocked at what I found. I was pleasantly surprised that everything that was connected to me was fairly accurate. One thing that continued to come up on every search engine that I used was the Mercedes Benz car dealership. Even when I used my last name in connection with my first, the car continued to show up. I always hear comments about my name so I am used to it but it was funny to see it repeatedly.

When searching youtube.com and linked.in.com I did not find any information about myself. I was happy because I do not have an account on either. I always have a fear that I will find something connected to me that I am not aware of. I did find another Mercedes Childress when I searched linkedin.com. She was not connected to me in another state and occupation. I wonder if someone searched me, would they find her instead. Things like that made me nervous about search engines.

After completing my search, I was glad that I did not find more information about myself. As a parent, I am grateful that my children can not go online and find false information about me.

  1. Hi Mercedes,

Thanks for sharing your experience relating to data mining. I see you weren't able to find much about you, which is nice. Personally, I was just connected to my social media accounts. I was also scared of what I would find. Thankfully, it was all good too. -Jannette
